Between juggling the indie film ‘The Wackness,’ the TV drama and other acting gigs, Meth is ‘four songs deep’ into a new LP.

Jan 4 2008 8:00 AM EST By Shaheem Reid / MTV News

Method Man is on his way to the Sundance Film Festival in two weeks, where he’ll be sitting in on the screening of his latest film, “The Wackness.”

“It’s cool as sh–,” he said of the film, which also co-stars Ben Kingsley and Mary-Kate Olsen, and was directed by up-and-comer Jonathan Levine. “This [guy] feels his life is wack. The lead character is played by Josh Peck, and it’s the story of a high school student [who’s] about to graduate — that’s addicted to pot. His psychiatrist is also a drug addict — that’s played by Ben Kingsley. Peck falls in love with Ben Kingsley’s daughter, who’s also a drug addict. Peck comes for advice from his supplier, who is me. I play a Rastafarian drug dealer. I really transformed. … I hired my own coach. … The dialogue they had was so Hollywood Jamaican, it was ridiculous. The person I worked with went in and wrote it over.”

Meth, who also has a role in the upcoming spoof film “Meet the Spartans,” said he’s trying to be diverse as possible in Hollywood. “After ‘How High,’ everybody wanted me to do comedy,” he explained.

In addition to his work as Melvin “Cheese” Wagstaff on the gritty HBO series “The Wire,” Method recently had a stint as a murderous “all-around bad dude” on “Law & Order.” “I don’t like following behind other rap n—as, but I found out [the show’s producers] hired a lot of mutha—-as from ‘The Wire,’ ” he explained. “So they probably seen my ‘Wire’ reel and was like, ‘Let’s f— with this dude.’ ”

What Meth Would Change

AHH asked a couple of people what they would change about Hip Hop. Meth was one of them.

Method Man:
Artist development is non existent now days. The way records are thrown out there, it’s like a flash in the pan. You are not giving a chance to have a brand name anymore. It’s not even a brand name anymore it’s a catchphrase or a theme or a hook. That’s not Hip-Hop to me. –

NASA Movie Trailer

Finally. After 4 1/2 years in the making, NASA has begun countdown to liftoff. NASA is an international collective of musicians spanning the genre spectrum. At the apex, Squeak E. Clean and Dj Zegon. We met in April of 2003 at a friends studio, and began to make music together the next day. We spent all of our time sampling rare Brazilian records from the 60’s and 70’s to make tracks, and soon we began to develop the concept for NASA. We appreciated how we had become such good friends through our passion for music, and decided to make a record with all of our heroes and favorite musicians with this as a model. People from different worlds coming together through shared inspiration and love of music. That’s why all the crazy collaborations like Ol’ Dirty Bastard with Karen O, and Fatlip, David Byrne with Chali 2na and Gift of Gab, or Tom Waits and Kool Keith. Rapper/producer also talks ODB-inspired new track featured on group’s 8 Diagrams.
By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Jasmine Dotiwala

“How can hip-hop be dead if Wu-Tang is forever?” the RZA asked over the summer. A few months later, some fans are asking if his sentiments will continue to hold true.

To the dismay of Wu-Tang fans, the Clan seem to be falling apart, and RZA is in the proverbial eye of the storm when it comes to the group’s open dissention. Two of the group’s most vocal, flamboyant and popular members, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, have accused the RZA of mismanaging the group’s money and creative malpractice.

Rae told New York radio personality Miss Info that he and the crew craved more street-orientated beats on the new album, 8 Diagrams. Meanwhile, Ghost told MTV News that the album was “rushed,” he hasn’t heard good word-of-mouth about the handful of records that have leaked and, most importantly, the RZA owes him more dough than they have at your favorite pizza shop.

Hip-hop heroes focus on solo work

IS WU-TANG CLAN OVER? “IT’s SON ice, really,” says Wu leader RZA. Despite breakup rumors, Wu may eventually come back someday. “When it’s time to rock, I think everybody’s down,” RZA says. In the meantime, bonds among the Staten Island, New York, rap crew are strong: Most of the Clan MCs are helping out with one another’s solo discs because, as Method Man puts it, they’re “Wu for life.”
What’s going on with Wu-Tang Cland

1. Masta Killa
He’s the only Wu-Tanger to never release a solo album-butthat’s aboutto change. Masta Killa will soon drop No Said Date, which RZA calls “a crazy classiccompletely raw. He’s the motherfucker right now.”

2. Raekwon
A new Raekwon effort — The Lex Diamond Story-is expected to come out later this year.
